The Draconic Script
The oldest inscription in the DragonWatch archive was sketched in 1742, by the party that made the first documented sighting, from a boundary stone in the Altai foothills. It was copied as decoration for two centuries before anyone recognised it as writing. The transcription systems built before that recognition reduced Draconic to a substitution cipher — one glyph per letter of the common alphabet — and lost the vowel length, dialect markers and tonal distinctions that native speakers consider essential. What follows is the native claw-carved script as dragons themselves cut it, which preserves everything those adaptations collapsed.
The script below is what field teams find scratched into lair walls, territorial boundary markers and ritual sites. Each glyph records a sound, not a letter. If you can sound a glyph out you can recognise a warning without knowing the word — and a warning is what most recovered inscriptions are. Read the encounter safety protocols before you go looking for one.
How the Script Works
Every glyph recovered to date is made of at most two sweeps and one strike: two curved arcs, dragged by a claw across the surface, and one short straight mark, a talon jab. Field teams call it “two sweeps and a strike”, and no inscription in the archive breaks it. Each sweep is heaviest where the claw first bit in — a visible gouge at the origin — and thins as the claw lifts. The limit is anatomical: a dragon’s foreclaw cannot make a third arc without repositioning, and dragons do not reposition for writing. That is what gives the script its flowing, organic appearance.
Glyphs fall into families by sound. Sounds made in the same part of the mouth share a sweep direction. Sounds made the same way share a sweep character. Voiced sounds add a diagonal strike to their voiceless counterpart. Once you know the pattern you can predict what an unfamiliar character sounds like — which is how the dialect glyphs were read years before any of them were heard.
Consonants
Stops — Abrupt, Commanding
Stop consonants end with a sharp terminus — the stroke cuts off abruptly, like the sound itself.

Nasals — Resonant, Looping
Nasal glyphs feature a recurved loop — the stroke echoes back on itself, like the resonance of air through the nasal cavity.

Affricates combine a stop and a fricative. Their glyphs start thick (like a stop) and taper thin (like a fricative).

Vowels
Vowels use small, open shapes — visually distinct from the larger consonant sweeps. This reflects the language's consonant-dominant nature. Their positions mirror the vowel space: front vowels face left, back vowels face right, open vowels are open shapes, closed vowels are closed shapes.

Long vowels are written with a horizontal bar beneath the vowel glyph — a single modifier rule that applies to all five vowels.
The Voicing System
The script's most powerful feature is the voicing strike: a short straight line cutting across the base glyph's main sweep at its midpoint. Any voiceless consonant can be made voiced by adding this single mark. This means voiced/voiceless pairs share a base shape — learners who know /p/ already know /b/.
This same pattern applies to all five voiced/voiceless pairs in the core inventory: p/b, t/d, k/g, f/v, s/z. In the metallic dialect, it extends further: sh/zh, th/dh, ch/j. The voicing strike is the single most productive modifier in the script.
Dialect Marks
The three dialects add sounds the core inventory lacks, but they add almost no new characters. Each dialect sound is written as a core glyph plus one small mark — a rule learners already know from the voicing strike. Only the chromatic glottal stop and the gem classifier click are new shapes, and both are deliberately the simplest marks in the script.
Chromatic — Force and Depth
A descending tail below the baseline pushes a sound deeper into the throat; an ejective hook at the terminus marks the popping release. The glottal stop is a single talon jab: the only glyph with no sweep at all.

Metallic — Voice and Softening
Metallic extends the voicing strike to three more bases, and adds a palatal curl above a glyph to soften it. The tap is the trill with a single oscillation.

Gem — Breath, Precision and Tone
Gem writes its lateral fricatives by tapering the fork of /l/, its palatal consonants on the palatal curl of /j/, and marks pitch with a mark above the vowel: an ascending tick for the high Crest tone, a falling hook for Descent. The low Root tone is unmarked. The classifier click is a ringed cross — a grammatical sign, not a claw stroke.
