Draconic Inscriptions

Dragons do not write letters. They carve. Almost everything DragonWatch has recovered of the claw script is short: a boundary stone, a seal across a vault door, a warning at a lair mouth, an oath cut into paired blades, a memorial on a quartz face. Two or three words, carved once, meant to outlast the carver.

This tool renders those inscriptions the way field teams find them. Pick a phrase from the DragonWatch phrase bank, or write your own romanized Draconic, then choose the dialect and the surface it was cut into. Download the result or print it as a handout for your table — a prop your players can hold, with the English key on the back of your hand.

How to read one

Inscriptions use the compressed formal register described in the grammar reference: pronouns are dropped, the copula is often omitted, and a full stop marks a new carved line. Each dialect carves the same message differently. Chromatic dragons add the emphatic kha and drop case endings; metallic dragons restore the copula, add honorifics and soften prohibitions into advice; gem dragons mark every statement with a high-tone witness evidential and classify every noun. Switch the dialect above to see the same inscription three ways, then read the script page for what each stroke means.

Read These Before You Enter

The International Dragon Research Institute lists misread inscriptions among the leading causes of fatal encounters, above equipment failure. Most recovered Draconic writing is a warning, and most warnings are short enough to learn in an afternoon. The marks below are every warning and threshold inscription in the DragonWatch phrase bank. If you find one of them cut into stone at head height, you are already inside the distance the encounter safety protocols require. Do not photograph it. Leave the way you came, facing the dark.

Stop! tsok! Warning. Bare root — the plain command. core
STOP NOW! tsok kha! Dire warning. The emphatic kha implies consequences. core
No enemy enters. ma gor sker enk. Boundary inscription — the classic threshold line. core
Look! skor! Direct order. Default for chromatic speakers, formal for others. core
LOOK, or die! skor kha, osh morkh! Threat-command: the order is backed by an explicit consequence. A chromatic threat display. chromatic
Do NOT look! ma skor kha! Emphatic prohibition. Carved over things that should stay unseen. core
Do not take. ma koz. Prohibition. The short form of a hoard seal. core
My territory. Do not enter. orkh khern. ma gor. Territorial boundary marker. Compressed formal register, no pronouns. core
Danger within. Death comes to those who approach. gres enk. morkh gor-ash. Lair entrance warning. core
Ancient hoard. Do not take. drosh thers. nokh koz. Hoard chamber seal. core

Chromatic carvers add the emphatic kha and cut deeper; a chromatic warning is the one you are least likely to have time to read. Metallic carvers soften a prohibition into advice, which changes the tone and nothing else. Gem carvers add a witness mark: the dragon that cut it was there, and may still be. The script page explains how to sound a glyph out when the word is unfamiliar.

Recovered Inscriptions

Six inscriptions from the DragonWatch field archive, one per surface and dialect. Each is linked to the dragon type it was recovered from.

Every phrase the tool knows, grouped by register. Glosses use the abbreviations from the grammar reference; the dialect column is the dialect the line was recorded in.
